The Ones We Never Appreciated

They seemed overbearing.
They poured knowledge into our minds.
They knew what we didn’t know were beyond the walls.
They were right.

We were defiant.
We were youthful.
We were shortsighted.
We were children.

They did their best.
They put us to the test.
They celebrated us.
They raised us over the walls and hoped we'd soar.

We were finally free.
But we were drowned in our independence.
And we were lost.
We realised then that they had been right.

They had been preparing us.
They had been moulding us.
They had been grooming us.
But we were blind.

We had to make them proud.
We had to make them see that the times had changed.
We had to do the impossible.
So we surpassed their expectations.

Now they can be proud.
Now they can say they were part of the story.
Now we can relate and they can confidently say,
"That was a student I taught".
